How Accepting Your Innate Nature Gives You Unexpected Freedom
You would think that having a fixed innate nature, as the Know Yourself Framework asserts, is limiting. You would be forgiven for thinking that it pigeonholes you and allows people to lazily fix you into some category or another. We would be more expected to assume that this snatches away your responsibility and gives you access to the lazy excuse that “I am just made this way.” None of these objections could be further from the truth.
Yes, you have intrinsic worth and you are unique with your own capacity for growth, change, and fulfilment. When we assert that you have a fixed innate nature, we, in no way, deny your intrinsic capacity for self-worth, growth, change, and fulfilment. What we do assert is that as you look at your life, your actions, the patterns of your thought, your broader emotional and psychological patterns, and the patterns of your health, you will see that there are some things that have remained constant. In fact, they are such a part of you that you are often blind to them because they are the very basis of how you are in the world. To see your own face, you need a mirror, and the Know Yourself Framework gives you a mirror with which to gaze upon your underlying patterns.
The same mirror that you use to gaze upon yourself is used to examine others, which allows you to interrogate your relationships with the people around you and to explore ways to apply the insights you acquire to improve your relationships with not only them but with yourself.
Your Innate Nature Does Not Limit You
Rather than the deeply patterned nature that you have inherited limiting you, it gives you a fixed form from which to build. For without your fixed form, you would be attempting to build upon shifting sand. And how would that work? You learn to see the patterns of people and to understand where the conflicts and natural congruences are likely to arise. By understanding your nature and how others tend to see you, you can then consciously engage. It allows you to proceed based upon an assessment of your likely options, and I teach you how to keep checking and to keep questioning your conclusions about yourself and others. Rather than teaching you to pigeonhole people, it teaches you to engage with people as a location of revelation. You will discover who they are as they unfold to you, and you have to keep checking and to keep adjusting. This is rooted in the principle that the creation as a whole is itself a Divine act of revelation. By extension, each thing reveals itself.
The Know Yourself Framework empowers you with a principle that I call Radical Self Responsibility. You must accept that if something gives you discomfort or you just don’t like it, the one who feels it is you, and the only one that you can guarantee will do something about it is you. So you work to change the situation by modifying your behaviour and responses first. Radical Self Responsibility radically empowers you, and it forces you to become strategic. You quickly learn to choose your battles very carefully, and it fixes you in what I can only describe as a feedback loop. As you learn to take Radical Self Responsibility, you then have to accept your contribution to the outcomes, and this teaches you to keep committing to and to get better at how you engage with your own change. If you choose to speak to your discomfort with the excuse that “this is how I naturally am anyway,” we call this “Choosing your pain!”
So you can be forgiven for thinking that:
- Having a fixed innate nature, as the Know Yourself Framework asserts, is limiting.
- That it pigeonholes you and allows people to lazily fix you into some category or another.
- That this snatches away your responsibility and gives you access to the lazy excuse that “I am just made this way.”
But as you can see, nothing could be further from the truth. Self acceptance by discovering your innate fixed nature give us some surprising benefits.
